About Anatomy Viewer
A browser-based 3D human anatomy viewer built on open data whose origin can be traced for every structure.
For education and reference only. Not for medical or diagnostic use. This is not a medical device. Do not use it for diagnosis, treatment, or surgical planning.
The model
The reference model
Know its limits before relying on it:
- The geometry goes back to a single adult male volunteer, imaged with MRI at 2 mm intervals (the TARO model). It does not show the variation between people.
- BodyParts3D divided the imaged tissues into individual structures using expert anatomical knowledge. That subdivision is modeling, not direct measurement.
- Some fine structures, such as the heart valves, are reported to be missing.
- Z-Anatomy reshaped many structures, for example by making the left and right sides mirror images. Each structure's provenance tag says how close it still is to BodyParts3D.
- Preparing the meshes for the web (fewer polygons, compression) changes their shape slightly. The measured error is given below and for each structure in its details panel.
Where the data comes from
- BodyParts3D 4.0, The Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS), Japan — CC BY 4.0. The original 3D structures, built on the TARO MRI model.
- Z-Anatomy, by Gauthier Kervyn (design, 3D, anatomy) and Marcin Zielinski (Blender add-on) — CC BY-SA 4.0. A Blender template that organizes and extends BodyParts3D; this project converts from it.
- This project exports one glTF file per anatomical system, removes assets whose licenses do not allow reuse, identifies every structure, measures it against BodyParts3D, simplifies and compresses it for the web, and measures the error. The result is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.
Also used:
- Cranial nerves and foramina from the University of Dundee, CAHID, included in Z-Anatomy — CC BY 4.0.
- Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) 5.1.0, Structural Informatics Group, University of Washington — CC BY 3.0. Structure IDs and names. The ontology itself is not redistributed.
- Wikidata — CC0 1.0. A dated snapshot of its Terminologia Anatomica (TA2) to FMA crosswalk.
Left out: the Z-Anatomy inner ear (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) and kidney model (CC BY-NC 4.0), whose licenses forbid commercial use, and assets whose license is not stated. Where BodyParts3D has the same structure, its original mesh is used instead.
